EPREL Registration: What Shopify Merchants Need to Know

What is EPREL?

EPREL stands for European Product Registry for Energy Labelling. It is a database set up and operated by the European Commission under the Energy Labelling Framework Regulation (EU) 2017/1369, with further implementation details defined in the EPREL Implementing Act (EU) 2024/994.

The database serves as a centralised repository for energy and environmental performance data on products that carry the EU energy label. According to the European Commission, EPREL is "a comprehensive database" that stores general product information, energy labels, product information sheets in multiple languages, market placement dates, and supplier contact information.

Who registers products in EPREL?

Product registration in EPREL is the responsibility of the supplier — typically the manufacturer or the importer who first places the product on the EU market. As the European Commission states, "manufacturers and importers are required to register their products in EPREL to comply with EU energy labeling regulations."

As a Shopify merchant (dealer/retailer), you do not register products in EPREL yourself. Your obligation is to display the energy label and product information sheet that the supplier has already registered. The data is already in the EPREL database — your task is to make it visible to your customers.

What does EPREL contain?

Each product registration in EPREL includes several data elements:

• General product information and specifications
• The energy label image
• Product information sheets (fiches) in all 24 official EU languages
• Market placement dates
• Supplier contact information
• For some newer product categories: repair/spare parts information and recycling data

The public-facing EPREL interface allows anyone to search by brand or model name, filter by multiple criteria, and compare products within a category.

How to find EPREL data for your products

There are several ways to find the EPREL entry for a product you sell:

• Search the EPREL public database at eprel.ec.europa.eu by brand and model name
• Use the product's GTIN (barcode number) to look up its EPREL registration
• Ask your supplier for the EPREL ID or registration number
• Scan the QR code on the physical energy label — it links directly to the EPREL entry

The European Commission notes that the QR code on every rescaled energy label leads directly to the official EPREL address, always beginning with ec.europa.eu. EPREL will never ask for personal data or payment.

What are your obligations as a Shopify merchant?

As an online retailer selling energy-labelled products to EU customers, your main obligations are:

• Display the energy label near the product price on your product pages
• Provide access to the product information sheet (fiche) for download
• Ensure the displayed data matches what is registered in EPREL

These obligations apply regardless of where your business is based — if you sell to EU customers, the regulations apply. Different product categories have their own delegated regulations, but the core obligation is consistent: show the label, provide the fiche.
