How to Connect EPREL to Your Shopify Store
A step-by-step guide to displaying EU energy labels, energy arrow icons, and product information sheets on your Shopify store using data from the official EPREL database.
What is EPREL?
EPREL (European Product Registry for Energy Labelling) is a database set up and operated by the European Commission. Under the Energy Labelling Framework Regulation (EU) 2017/1369, manufacturers and importers are required to register their energy-related products in EPREL before placing them on the EU market.
The database contains energy labels, product information sheets (fiches), and technical documentation for each registered product. It covers household appliances, lighting, electronic displays, smartphones, tablets, tyres, and commercial refrigeration equipment, among other product categories.
Since March 2021, the EPREL database has been publicly searchable. Each energy label includes a QR code that links directly to the product's EPREL entry. According to the European Commission, the QR code always leads to an address beginning with ec.europa.eu.
Why online retailers need to display EPREL data
EU energy labelling regulations require that online retailers display the energy label and provide access to the product information sheet for covered product categories. This applies to any retailer selling to EU customers, regardless of where the business is based.
The energy label must be shown near the product price so that customers can see the energy efficiency class before making a purchase decision. The product information sheet, which contains detailed technical data, must also be accessible from the product page.
According to Eurobarometer data from 2024, 93% of EU consumers recognise the energy label, and 75% report using it when purchasing products. Displaying energy data is not only a regulatory requirement — it provides customers with information they actively look for.
How EPREL Label Buddy connects your store to EPREL
EPREL Label Buddy is a Shopify app that fetches energy data from the official EPREL database and displays it on your storefront. Here is how the setup works:
Install the app
Install EPREL Label Buddy from the Shopify App Store. The Basic plan includes a 14-day free trial with no credit card required.
Link your products to EPREL
Search for your products by GTIN (barcode number) or EPREL ID. The app queries the official EPREL database and fetches the energy data, including the energy class, consumption values, and product information sheet. For stores with large catalogs, the Standard and Pro plans support bulk import via CSV or an interactive table.
Add the app block to your theme
EPREL Label Buddy uses Shopify's native app blocks (Online Store 2.0+). Go to your theme editor, add the energy label block to your product page template, and energy arrows and datasheet download links will appear on your storefront. No coding required.
Automatic updates
The app syncs with the EPREL database in the background. When energy data is updated in EPREL, the changes are reflected on your store automatically. No manual file downloads or uploads needed.
EPREL Label Buddy is not affiliated with or endorsed by the European Union or EPREL. Merchants are responsible for verifying their own compliance with applicable EU regulations.
Supported product categories
EPREL Label Buddy supports all major EU energy labelling regulations currently in force:
