EU Energy Labelling

EU Energy Labels for Electronic Displays

Since 1 March 2021, electronic displays sold online in the EU must show a rescaled energy label using the A to G scale. This applies to televisions, monitors, and signage displays. The requirement is set out in Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/2013, supplementing the Energy Labelling Framework Regulation (EU) 2017/1369.

What does Regulation (EU) 2019/2013 require?

Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/2013 requires that electronic displays placed on the EU market carry an energy label with the rescaled A to G efficiency classes. The regulation replaced the previous A+++ to D scale for this product category, effective 1 March 2021.

Suppliers (manufacturers and importers) must register each product model in the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL) before placing it on the market. The EPREL database, established under Regulation (EU) 2017/1369, is operated by the European Commission and contains the energy label, product information sheet (fiche), and technical documentation for each registered model.

For online sales, dealers must display the energy label and provide access to the product information sheet near the product price. The label includes a QR code that links directly to the product's entry in the EPREL database.

Who needs to comply?

This regulation applies to any business selling electronic displays to customers in the European Union, regardless of where the seller is based. This includes televisions, monitors, and signage displays with a screen size of 100 cm² or more.

Both physical retailers and online shops must display the energy label. For online retailers, the energy label and product fiche must be accessible to the customer before purchase, typically shown near the product listing or product price.

What must online retailers display?

Online retailers must make two documents accessible to customers near the product price: the energy label and the product information sheet (fiche). Both are provided by the supplier via the EPREL database — retailers do not need to create or assemble this data themselves.

The energy label for electronic displays includes the following information:

  • Energy efficiency class (A to G scale)
  • Energy consumption in kWh per 1000 hours in SDR and HDR mode
  • Visible screen diagonal in centimetres and inches
  • Screen resolution in horizontal and vertical pixels
  • QR code linking to the product's entry in the EPREL database

The product information sheet contains further technical details and is available for download in all 24 official EU languages via the EPREL database.

How EPREL Label Buddy helps with electronic displays

EPREL Label Buddy fetches the energy data for electronic displays directly from the official EPREL database using the product's GTIN or EPREL ID. The app displays the energy arrow icon on your Shopify product pages and provides a link for customers to download the product information sheet.

The app automatically detects the customer's browser language and serves the product information sheet in the matching EU language from the EPREL database, covering all 24 official EU languages.

For stores with multiple display models, the Standard and Pro plans support bulk import of EPREL IDs via CSV or an interactive table, so you can link your entire catalog without manual product-by-product entry.

EPREL Label Buddy is not affiliated with or endorsed by the European Union or EPREL. Merchants are responsible for verifying their own compliance with applicable EU regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to display energy labels for TVs sold online?
Yes. Under Regulation (EU) 2019/2013, online retailers selling electronic displays (including TVs and monitors) to EU customers must display the energy label and make the product information sheet available before purchase.
What is the rescaled energy label?
Since 1 March 2021, the EU energy label for electronic displays uses a simplified A to G scale, replacing the previous A+++ to D system. According to the European Commission, 93% of consumers recognise the energy label and 79% take it into account when purchasing products.
What is EPREL?
EPREL (European Product Registry for Energy Labelling) is a database set up and operated by the European Commission under Regulation (EU) 2017/1369. Suppliers must register their products in EPREL before placing them on the EU market. The database contains energy labels, product information sheets, and technical documentation.
Does the energy label include a QR code?
Yes. The rescaled energy label includes a QR code that links directly to the product's entry in the official EPREL database. According to the European Commission, the QR code always leads to an address beginning with ec.europa.eu.
Where should the energy label be shown on my online store?
The energy label should be displayed near the product price so that customers can see the energy efficiency class before making a purchase decision. A link to the product information sheet (fiche) should also be accessible from the product page.
