EU Energy Labelling

EU Energy Labels for Air Conditioners

Air conditioners sold in the EU must carry an energy label under Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) No 626/2011. This regulation supplements the Energy Labelling Framework and requires that air conditioning units display their energy efficiency for both cooling and heating modes.

What does Regulation (EU) No 626/2011 require?

Regulation (EU) No 626/2011 requires air conditioners placed on the EU market to carry an energy label. The label shows energy efficiency for both cooling and heating modes.

Suppliers must register products in the EPREL database. Online retailers must display the energy label and product information sheet near the product price.

Who needs to comply?

This regulation applies to air conditioners and comfort fans sold in the EU. It covers products sold in physical stores and online.

If you sell air conditioners to EU customers through your online shop, you must display the energy label.

What must online retailers display?

Online retailers must make two documents accessible to customers near the product price: the energy label and the product information sheet (fiche). Both are provided by the supplier via the EPREL database — retailers do not need to create or assemble this data themselves.

The energy label for air conditioners includes the following information:

  • Energy efficiency class for cooling (A+++ to D scale)
  • Energy efficiency class for heating (A+++ to D scale)
  • Rated capacity in kW (cooling and heating)
  • SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) for cooling
  • SCOP (Seasonal Coefficient of Performance) for heating
  • Sound power level in dB(A) for indoor and outdoor units
  • QR code linking to the product's entry in the EPREL database

The product information sheet contains further technical details and is available for download in all 24 official EU languages via the EPREL database.

How EPREL Label Buddy helps with air conditioners

EPREL Label Buddy fetches air conditioner energy data from the official EPREL database using the product's GTIN or EPREL ID.

The product information sheet is served in the customer's browser language from the EPREL database.

The app supports product variants for air conditioners that come in multiple configurations.

EPREL Label Buddy is not affiliated with or endorsed by the European Union or EPREL. Merchants are responsible for verifying their own compliance with applicable EU regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Under Regulation (EU) No 626/2011, online retailers selling air conditioners to EU customers must display the energy label and product information sheet.
Does the air conditioner label use the A to G scale?
Air conditioners currently use the older A+++ to D scale under Regulation (EU) No 626/2011. A rescaling to the A to G format may be introduced in future regulatory updates.
Does the label cover both cooling and heating?
Yes. The air conditioner energy label shows separate efficiency classes for cooling mode and heating mode, along with SEER and SCOP values.
