EU Energy Labelling

EU Energy Labels for Tyres

Since 1 May 2021, tyres sold online in the EU must display the EU tyre label under Regulation (EU) 2020/740. The label provides information on fuel efficiency, wet grip, and external rolling noise to help consumers compare tyres before purchase.

What does Regulation (EU) 2020/740 require?

Regulation (EU) 2020/740 on the labelling of tyres replaced the earlier Regulation (EC) No 1222/2009. It requires that tyres placed on the EU market carry a label showing fuel efficiency class, wet grip class, and external rolling noise class, each on an A to E scale.

Tyre suppliers must register their products in the EPREL database (European Product Registry for Energy Labelling) before placing them on the EU market. The EPREL registration is required under the framework of Regulation (EU) 2017/1369.

For online sales, the tyre label must be displayed near the product price. Customers must be able to see the energy efficiency, wet grip, and noise data before making a purchase decision.

Who needs to comply?

This regulation applies to C1 (passenger car), C2 (light truck), and C3 (heavy-duty truck) tyres placed on the EU market. It applies to all sales channels, including online shops.

If you sell tyres to EU customers through your online store, you must display the EU tyre label regardless of where your business is located. Retreaded tyres, off-road professional tyres, and racing tyres are excluded.

What must online retailers display?

Online retailers must make two documents accessible to customers near the product price: the energy label and the product information sheet (fiche). Both are provided by the supplier via the EPREL database — retailers do not need to create or assemble this data themselves.

The energy label for tyres includes the following information:

  • Fuel efficiency class (A to E scale)
  • Wet grip class (A to E scale)
  • External rolling noise class (A to C) and noise value in dB
  • Snow grip performance indicator (where applicable)
  • Ice grip performance indicator (where applicable)
  • QR code linking to the product's entry in the EPREL database

The product information sheet contains further technical details and is available for download in all 24 official EU languages via the EPREL database.

How EPREL Label Buddy helps with tyres

EPREL Label Buddy retrieves tyre energy data directly from the official EPREL database. Enter the product's GTIN or EPREL ID, and the app fetches the fuel efficiency class, wet grip class, noise data, and links to the product information sheet.

For tyre shops with large catalogs, the Standard and Pro plans support bulk import of EPREL IDs via CSV. This allows you to link hundreds of tyre models at once instead of entering each one individually.

The app displays the energy arrow icon on your product pages and provides customers with access to the product information sheet in their browser language, drawing from the EPREL database's multilingual resources.

EPREL Label Buddy is not affiliated with or endorsed by the European Union or EPREL. Merchants are responsible for verifying their own compliance with applicable EU regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to display the EU tyre label in my online shop?
Yes. Under Regulation (EU) 2020/740, online retailers selling tyres to EU customers must display the tyre label near the product price. The label must show fuel efficiency, wet grip, and external rolling noise data.
What changed with the 2021 tyre label?
Regulation (EU) 2020/740 replaced the earlier Regulation (EC) No 1222/2009 from 1 May 2021. The new label added a QR code linking to the EPREL database and introduced snow grip and ice grip indicators where applicable.
Which tyres are covered by the regulation?
The regulation covers C1 (passenger car), C2 (light truck), and C3 (heavy-duty truck) tyres. Retreaded tyres, off-road professional tyres, and racing tyres are excluded.
Does the tyre label use the same A to G scale as appliances?
The tyre label uses an A to E scale for fuel efficiency and wet grip, and an A to C scale for external rolling noise. This differs from the A to G scale used for household appliances.
Where can I find the EPREL ID for my tyre products?
The EPREL ID is assigned when the tyre supplier registers the product in the EPREL database. You can search for tyres in EPREL by brand and model name, or ask your supplier for the EPREL registration details.
