EU Energy Labelling

EU Energy Labels for Household Washing Machines

Since 1 March 2021, household washing machines and washer-dryers sold online in the EU must carry a rescaled energy label with the A to G efficiency scale. This obligation is set out in Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/2014, supplementing the Energy Labelling Framework Regulation (EU) 2017/1369.

What does Regulation (EU) 2019/2014 require?

Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/2014 requires that household washing machines and washer-dryers placed on the EU market display an energy label using the rescaled A to G classes. This regulation replaced the former A+++ to D scale for washing machines, effective 1 March 2021.

Suppliers must register each washing machine model in EPREL (European Product Registry for Energy Labelling) before placing the product on the EU market. The EPREL database, established under Regulation (EU) 2017/1369 and operated by the European Commission, stores the energy label, product information sheet, and technical documentation.

Online dealers must display the energy label and make the product information sheet accessible near the product price. The rescaled label includes a QR code linking to the product's EPREL entry.

Who needs to comply?

This regulation applies to household washing machines and washer-dryers sold to consumers in the EU. It covers products sold both in physical stores and online, regardless of where the seller is located.

If you sell washing machines from any brand to EU customers through your online shop, you are required to display the energy label and product fiche for each model.

What must online retailers display?

Online retailers must make two documents accessible to customers near the product price: the energy label and the product information sheet (fiche). Both are provided by the supplier via the EPREL database — retailers do not need to create or assemble this data themselves.

The energy label for household washing machines includes the following information:

  • Energy efficiency class (A to G scale)
  • Weighted energy consumption per 100 cycles in kWh (for the eco 40-60 programme)
  • Rated capacity in kg for the eco 40-60 programme
  • Weighted water consumption per cycle in litres
  • Duration of the eco 40-60 programme at rated capacity
  • Airborne acoustical noise emission class (A to D)
  • Spin-drying efficiency class (A to G)
  • QR code linking to the product's entry in the EPREL database

The product information sheet contains further technical details and is available for download in all 24 official EU languages via the EPREL database.

How EPREL Label Buddy helps with household washing machines

EPREL Label Buddy retrieves the energy data for washing machines directly from the official EPREL database. By entering the product's GTIN or EPREL ID, the app fetches the correct energy class, consumption data, and links to the product information sheet.

The product information sheet is automatically served in the customer's browser language. The EPREL database provides fiches in all 24 official EU languages, so your store can serve international customers without manual translation work.

The app supports product variants, so if you sell a washing machine model in different configurations (e.g. different load capacities), each variant can be linked to its own EPREL entry and will display the correct energy data when the customer selects it.

EPREL Label Buddy is not affiliated with or endorsed by the European Union or EPREL. Merchants are responsible for verifying their own compliance with applicable EU regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to show energy labels for washing machines in my online shop?
Yes. Under Regulation (EU) 2019/2014, any online retailer selling household washing machines or washer-dryers to EU customers must display the energy label and make the product information sheet (fiche) available.
When did the new energy label scale take effect for washing machines?
The rescaled A to G energy label for household washing machines took effect on 1 March 2021, replacing the previous A+++ to D scale.
What data is shown on the washing machine energy label?
The label shows the energy efficiency class (A to G), weighted energy consumption in kWh per 100 cycles, rated capacity in kg, water consumption per cycle, programme duration, noise emission class, and spin-drying efficiency class. It also includes a QR code linking to the EPREL database.
Does the regulation apply to washer-dryers too?
Yes. Regulation (EU) 2019/2014 covers both household washing machines and washer-dryers.
What is the product information sheet (fiche)?
The product information sheet, sometimes called a product fiche, is a standardised document containing detailed technical data about the product. Under EU regulations, it must be made available to customers. The EPREL database provides these sheets in all 24 official EU languages.
